Developed jointly by HCA Healthcare and Google Cloud, Nurse Handoff uses generative AI to pull together patient information scattered across the electronic health record, vitals, medication changes, care plan updates, pending orders, and recent notes, and organize it into a standardized summary a nurse can quickly review and verify before passing a patient to the next shift. Rather than relying on a nurse’s memory or informal shorthand scribbled during a rushed end-of-shift conversation, the tool is designed to surface the same categories of information every time, in the same format, regardless of which unit or which nurse is doing the handoff.
Early Pilot Numbers
HCA Healthcare has been running the tool at five hospitals as an initial pilot. In that early testing, nurses judged the AI-generated handoff summaries to be accurate in more than 85% of cases and rated them useful more than 90% of the time, according to the company. Supporters of the approach, including hospital safety researchers, argue that standardizing handoffs with AI addresses a documented, decades-old patient-safety weak point, since studies have long linked incomplete or inconsistent shift-change communication to medication errors, delayed treatment, and other adverse events. Skeptics, including some nursing labor advocates, caution that introducing AI into a task as high-stakes as patient handoff requires nurses to retain ultimate responsibility for verifying the summary’s accuracy every time, and worry that a tool rated accurate in only 85% of pilot cases still leaves a meaningful share of handoffs where a nurse must catch and correct an AI-generated error under the same time pressure the tool was meant to relieve.
How It Fits HCA’s Broader AI Strategy
Nurse Handoff is one piece of a larger AI rollout at HCA Healthcare that also includes ambient clinical documentation tools using automatic speech recognition and natural language processing to draft physician notes from patient conversations, particularly in emergency departments where documentation burden is heaviest.
