Your Records, Your Chatbot: OpenAI Launches ChatGPT Health

OpenAI's new ChatGPT Health lets people plug their own lab results and wellness data into the chatbot — turning a general assistant into a personal health interpreter, with real privacy stakes.

Asking a chatbot a general health question is one thing. Asking it about your blood work is another. On January 7, 2026, OpenAI launched ChatGPT Health, a dedicated space inside ChatGPT where people can connect their own patient portals, Apple Health and wellness apps — then ask questions grounded in their personal lab results and visit summaries rather than the internet at large. It is a quiet but significant step in moving AI from generic advice to something that knows your actual numbers.

What it actually does

Inside the new Health space, users can securely connect medical records and apps like Apple Health, Function and MyFitnessPal. ChatGPT can then help make sense of recent test results, prepare questions before a doctor’s appointment, talk through diet and workout routines, or weigh the tradeoffs of different insurance options based on a person’s own healthcare patterns. The pitch is simple: less guessing, more context.

Where the data comes from

The medical-records piece runs through a partnership with b.well, which aggregates data from roughly 2.2 million U.S. healthcare providers. That breadth is what makes the feature more than a novelty — it means a meaningful share of Americans could pull real visit notes and lab values into the chatbot rather than typing them in by hand.

The privacy design

Health is built as a separate space with added protections. Conversations, connected apps and files are stored apart from a user’s other chats, and OpenAI says Health conversations are not used to train its foundational models. For data this sensitive, that separation is the whole ballgame — and it signals OpenAI knows trust, not capability, is the gating factor here.

Who can use it

Access is starting small. Early access opened to a limited group of users on ChatGPT’s Free, Go, Plus and Pro plans, outside the European Economic Area, Switzerland and the UK. Medical-record integrations and some apps are U.S.-only for now, and connecting Apple Health requires an iOS device. OpenAI says it plans to expand to all users on web and iOS in the coming weeks.

The caveat that matters

A chatbot that reads your labs is not a doctor. AI can misread context, present outdated guidance confidently, or miss the nuance a clinician would catch — and the stakes are far higher with health than with a recipe. The smart use is as a translator and a preparation tool: understand your results, walk into the appointment with better questions, and let the professional make the call.

Why it matters

ChatGPT Health marks the shift from AI that answers anyone’s questions to AI that answers yours, using your own data. If it works as designed — helpful, private, and clear about its limits — it could make the most confusing parts of modern healthcare a little more navigable. The promise is real; so is the responsibility that comes with handing a chatbot your medical history.
