Perfect symmetry is featureless. It is when symmetry breaks that structure, direction, and distinction appear. Much of the richness of the world is the shattering of an underlying sameness.

Symmetry breaking occurs when a system whose laws are symmetric settles into a state that is not. The rules treat all directions alike, yet the outcome picks one. Sameness in law becomes difference in fact.

The mechanism is choice among equals. When many equivalent states are possible, the system must fall into one, breaking the symmetry it began with. The selection creates asymmetry from nowhere in particular.
