At the microscopic level, physics runs equally well forward and backward; the film of colliding particles looks lawful in reverse. Yet the everyday world is stubbornly one-directional. Reconciling the two is a persistent puzzle.

Reversibility is the property that a process can run backward, returning a system to its earlier state. The fundamental laws are reversible; macroscopic processes generally are not. The two levels seem to disagree.

Why it holds

The mechanism of apparent irreversibility is statistics. Reversing a macroscopic process would require an extraordinarily improbable arrangement, so in practice it never happens. Irreversibility is overwhelming odds, not law.
