Novo Nordisk, the Danish pharmaceutical giant behind Ozempic and Wegovy, announced on August 10 that it has made Amazon Web Services its preferred cloud provider and strategic AI partner. The deal goes beyond a typical vendor contract: AWS engineers and scientists are now embedded alongside Novo Nordisk’s own researchers inside a newly created co-innovation hub at the company’s King’s Cross facility in London, working shoulder to shoulder on live drug-discovery problems rather than handing over software and walking away.
What the partnership actually involves
The centerpiece of the deal is Amazon Bio Discovery, a tool that lets bench biologists design and screen candidate drug molecules using plain-language instructions instead of writing code. Alongside it, Novo Nordisk is deploying Amazon Bedrock and Bedrock AgentCore to build autonomous AI agents capable of pulling together genomic, imaging and clinical trial data that today sits scattered across separate internal systems, often in incompatible formats that slow down even simple cross-referencing. The goal, according to both companies, is to compress the path from identifying a biological drug target to dosing the first human volunteer — historically a process that can take the better part of a decade and consume hundreds of millions of dollars before a single patient is treated.
Staffing the hub with AWS’s own people
Unusually, AWS is not simply licensing software to Novo Nordisk; it is physically placing members of its Forward Deployed Engineering team and AWS Professional Services organization inside the pharma company’s research environment. Those engineers sit with Novo Nordisk’s target-discovery and computational biology teams day to day, tuning models against real internal datasets instead of generic benchmarks. That arrangement mirrors a growing trend among cloud providers of embedding engineers directly with life-sciences clients rather than leaving them to integrate AI tools on their own, a model AWS has also used with other biotech and health-system customers this year as competition with Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud for pharma workloads intensifies.

Novo Nordisk says more than 25,000 employees already have access to AI tools built on the partnership, and the company has reported reduced time spent on clinical documentation as an early, measurable benefit. Executives have framed the London hub as a template that could later expand to manufacturing scheduling and regulatory submissions, two areas where paperwork and compliance checks routinely add months to a drug’s path to market, though the companies have not put a dollar figure on the multi-year agreement or specified how long the initial contract runs.

The announcement lands amid a wave of similar tie-ups between drugmakers and AI providers. Eli Lilly struck a $2.75 billion deal with Insilico Medicine in March to bring AI-developed drugs to market, and Pathos AI closed roughly $2.3 billion in cancer-drug licensing deals in early August, including an agreement with AstraZeneca. Novo Nordisk, facing intensifying competition in the obesity-drug market from Eli Lilly’s rival GLP-1 treatments and a crowded field of biosimilar entrants preparing to enter once patents lapse, has cast the AWS partnership as a way to protect its lead by getting new compounds through discovery faster rather than simply outspending rivals on marketing and manufacturing capacity.

AWS executives describe the hub as proof that agentic AI can operate directly on proprietary biological data, not just generic text and code, calling it a shift from AI as a productivity add-on to AI as a core part of the research and development workflow. Independent drug-discovery researchers are more measured, noting that AI has repeatedly accelerated early-stage target identification and molecule design in recent years without yet producing a proportional increase in drugs that clear clinical trials — the actual bottleneck in getting treatments to patients, since human safety and efficacy testing cannot be shortened by better software alone.
