Left to run, a system tends toward certain states and shuns others. These preferred regions, toward which many starting points flow, organize its behavior. To understand a system is often to map its attractors.

The intuition

An attractor is a set of states toward which a dynamical system tends to evolve. Many different initial conditions converge to the same eventual behavior. The attractor is the destination of the flow.

The structure

The mechanism is convergence. Trajectories are drawn inward, so long-term behavior is governed by the attractor regardless of where the system began. Origins are forgotten; destinations dominate.
