The claim
Compositionality is the principle that the meaning of a whole derives from its parts and their arrangement. Understand the pieces and the rules of combination, and you understand novel wholes. Finite means yield infinite ends.

The mechanism is structure-sensitive combination. Parts contribute meaning according to how they are put together, so the same elements in different orders mean different things. Syntax carries semantic weight.
