Decoherence is the loss of a system’s quantum coherence through entanglement with its environment. As a system interacts with countless surrounding particles, its superpositions become effectively inaccessible. The quantum blur is dispersed, not erased.

The mechanism is entanglement with the many. Information about a system’s state spreads into its environment, so interference between possibilities can no longer be observed locally. The coherence is lost to the surroundings.
