The intuition

The exploration-exploitation dilemma is the trade-off between using current knowledge and gathering more. Exploitation harvests the best option known so far. Exploration risks a worse outcome now for better information later.

The structure

The mechanism is uncertainty. When the value of options is unknown, only trying them reveals it, but every trial of the unproven forgoes the proven. Information has a price paid in immediate reward.

The subtlety

The balance shifts with time. Early on, when little is known, exploration pays; later, when knowledge is rich, exploitation dominates. The optimal explorer grows more conservative as it learns.

The price

No fixed rule is right for all cases. Explore too little and you settle for mediocrity; explore too much and you never enjoy what you found. The dilemma has no assumption-free solution.
