Erasing a bit of information is not free. To discard what a system knows, one must pay a minimum amount of energy, dissipated as heat. Forgetting has an unavoidable physical price.

Landauer’s principle states that erasing one bit of information requires a minimum expenditure of energy, released as heat to the environment. Logical irreversibility entails physical dissipation. Forgetting warms the world.

The mechanism is entropy. Erasure reduces the number of possible states of the memory, and that reduction must be compensated by an increase in entropy elsewhere. The second law demands payment.
