In many real networks, most nodes have few connections while a handful have enormous numbers. This lopsided structure, lacking any typical scale of connectivity, shapes how the network behaves. A few hubs hold the web together.

The intuition

A scale-free network is one whose distribution of connections follows a power law. Most nodes are sparsely linked, but rare hubs are richly connected. There is no characteristic number of links.

The structure

The mechanism is preferential attachment. As a network grows, new nodes tend to link to already-popular ones, so the rich get richer and hubs emerge. Growth plus preference breeds inequality.

The subtlety

The turn concerns robustness and fragility together. Such networks tolerate random failures well, since most nodes are minor, but collapse if their hubs are targeted. Strength and vulnerability share a source.

The price

The structure shapes spreading. Epidemics, information, and failures propagate differently through hub-dominated networks, often with no clear threshold for takeoff. Connectivity is dominated by the few.
