Transfer learning is the reuse of what a model learned on one problem to speed learning on another. Rather than starting from nothing, the learner starts from prior competence. The second task inherits the first’s understanding.

The mechanism

The mechanism is shared structure. Different tasks often rest on common features, and a representation built for one exposes regularities useful to many. The overlap is where transfer lives.

An unexpected turn

The turn is that generality can precede specialization. A model trained broadly acquires features that specialize cheaply, inverting the usual order of narrow-then-wide. Breadth first, depth later.

The hidden cost

Transfer can also harm. When tasks differ in the wrong ways, prior knowledge misleads, and negative transfer leaves the learner worse than naive. Similarity is not guaranteed by proximity.

The implication is that learning compounds. Each task can leave a residue that eases the next, so competence accumulates rather than resets. Intelligence looks less like solving problems than like growing capacity.

Knowledge, well-represented, is not confined to its origin. What makes the idea durable is not that it settles a question but that it reframes many. It teaches where to look and what to discount, which is often more valuable than any particular answer it yields. Understood in this spirit, it becomes a habit of attention rather than a doctrine, and habits of attention are what distinguish deep comprehension from mere knowledge.
