We build systems of axioms and rules hoping to capture a domain completely and mechanically. Yet such systems run into walls: statements they cannot decide, consistency they cannot certify. Formalization has intrinsic limits.
The claim
A formal system is a set of symbols, axioms, and rules for deriving theorems mechanically. Its promise is certainty through rigor. Its limits are that rigor cannot reach every truth.
